Glasgow made the High Street and the High Street made Glasgow!

In the 850 years since Glasgow’s first burgh charter, what was originally just a steep forest path became home to: Scotland’s only surviving medieval cathedral; a weekly market; an ancient castle; the fourth oldest, English speaking, university in the world; the City’s first Town Hall and a hospital which pioneered techniques which transformed world medicine. Over many centuries the High Street was the City of Glasgow. There are few more historically important thoroughfares anywhere. Some who once strode the High Street’s cobbles are among the greatest names in all of human history.

However, while acknowledging the roles played by bishops and kings, this is a book about Glaswegians, the people who made the City, how they lived, their struggles, even what they ate and the gossip down the pub– right up to the present day. And Glasgow’s High Street, the focus of so many glories past, might yet be the key to a glorious future!
